Crystal Falls, Upper MI

After my visit to Sault Ste. Marie in Canada I drove down and stopped by few more interesting locations including Crystal Falls, Upper Michigan. Crystal Falls is home of the world’s largest natural underground mushroom colony (37 acres, weighs in 21,000 lbs., and is around 1,500 years old.) The locals affectionally refer to it as the ‘Humongous Fungus’ and each year host a Fungus Fest… celebrating mushrooms? Not exactly sure what goes on at a mushroom festival, but now I’m curious. That night I ate a burger made from mushrooms and paired with fries for dinner at a quaint 50’s style diner. I know, very appropriate.

During my visit to Crystal Falls, I hiked to a waterfall named Munising Falls. I know it’s getting confusing. First I go to the Crystal Falls in Canada, then I visit a town named Crystal Falls in Upper MI and the waterfall there is named Munising. Anyways, it was a beautiful day to visit waterfalls and lots of people were out on the trails enjoying nature!
